Twelve Key Things To Do After Moving To The US

All of us get euphoric when we learn that we are going to experience living in a different country. Whether it’s the thought of making new friends, living in a different scenery, driving different cars or just soaking in the culture of another civilization, it’s natural to be excited and lofty in the days before the big adventure.

But then, we sit down and start making a list of everything to be done before the move and reality starts to sink in. You realize there is a lot to be done even before you can board the flight over. But’s that all good - you get your visas, make arrangements to dispose or rent your local belongings, get your finances in order, book tickets and hotels. The day you were dreaming of arrives and you board that flight and make a grand entrance into the USA.

It is, however, what needs to be done after this that we hardly prepare or have the time or resources to prepare for. Many that have visited US on B1/B2 for official trips think they know all there is to it but nothing is further from the truth. Living in the US on your chain vs the cushion of corporate blanket are two world’s apart. The “chain of surprises and unknowns” start to hit you slowly & gradually and you long for someone/something that could have prepared you well for what to do after you have made the move to the US.

Well, fret not, because this is exactly what this and subsequent blogs endeavor to do. This is extracted from personal experience and as they say “theory is good but practice is what matters”. So, what all do you need to take care of after you have arrived in the US? Here’s the list and each takes you to a detailed blog for that particular step. With this you can arm yourself much better, avoid costly mistakes and reduce a ton of stress.

1) Go through immigration interview (Common questions/I-94/Checking stamped date)

2) The first ride or drive to the hotel (Paying with foreign credit card/Opting in for damage insurance)

3) Getting a cellphone SIM card (Contract or unlocked phones/Payment deposit/Talk, text, data plans)

4) Filling out the time-sensitive employment forms part 1 (Filling I-9 e-verify/W-4 tax witholding)

5) Applying for SSN

6) Opening the first bank account (Credit unions or banks/checking or savings/debit & credit cards/paypal)

7) Filling out employment forms - part 2 (Deposit distribution/Insurance selections)

8) Renting a house (Lease duration/Credit check/Application fees/ Deposit/Renters insurance/Utility connections)

9) Applying for a driving license (DMV written test/DMV driving test/DMV ID card)

10) Shopping for basics (Online vs in store/Price match guarantees/Returns/Furniture/Bedding/Mattresses/Kitchen Appliances/Outdoors)

11) Buying a car (Credit checks/Pre-approved loan/Insurance/Cashier’s check)

12) Applying for L2 EAD (If on L1 visa)

Cardboard Tube Dog Puppet Craft for Kids

Dogs are arguably one of the first few animals that a baby is introduced to. So, it’s no surprise they hold a special place in children’s hearts and minds.

It’s endearing to hear them imitating the woof woof sounds and see them get super excited when they see the great diversity of sizes and color in dogs around them.

This one, therefore, is to the memory of all the wonderful dogs driven happiness in our tot’s and our life. For extra credit, this one comes with all the moves so our tot not only enjoyed making this but is having a ball playing with it.

Cardboard Tube House Craft

There’s no place like home
There’s no place like home

These lines written nearly 200 years ago are as true as ever. Even more so, for our little tot, whose eyes light up as soon as we bring her home after some time outside. Home is where she can relax, be herself and go wild. And for us, having our tot loiter around us is what makes home that much more sweeter.

So, as a tribute, my tot and I decided to create this Home, Sweet Home craft this time. It was a lot of fun and I think it came out really well.

Paper Giraffe Craft

The tallest one is part of my tot's craft family. We are calling it Sophie La Girafe. This name comes from a famous French teething toy which apparently almost every child in America owns. It's a nice and soft rubber teething toy to soothe baby's sore gums.

Tree of Love!

The importance of grandparents and grandparents' love for their grandchildren will never change. Today is my tot's turn to surprise her grandparents on their wedding anniversary. So, we decided to wish them through this beautiful centerpiece and we named it "Tree of Love" to celebrate the special day. "Dadi" here stands for grandmother and "Dadu" for grandfather. Both were overjoyed when they were presented with this cute and hearty craft.

Paper Plate Clock Craft

What time is it?

Learning to read analog clock can be challenging for kids. Teaching time through this easy clock craft can make it fun instead. In the process, introduce the numbers on a clock, the hour hand, and the minute hand. It's a great exercise for number sorting as well.

To double the fun for my daughter, we added her favorite Mickey Mouse cutout in the center. Here is how it looks like.

Cute little butterflies of love!

Peekaboo is a universally loved mini-act for kids. On similar lines, opening up your hands to unveil a lots of chocolates, treats or m&m is something that makes their eyes go wide. However, this time it was my husband's time to go wide-eyed. The mom & tot team created this impression of lots of tiny colorful butterflies emerging from the hands of our lil tot's hand impression.

Stealthy Ninja on the Prowl

My husband is a big fan of Japanese manga series whether it is Naruto, One piece, Bleach, Dragon ball or Hunter x Hunter. He got hooked on to manga in 2005 and has never missed a chapter since. What's more he is so crazy that he watches the anime after reading the manga as well! I am guessing he is just a sucker for stories of valor and battles, which are abundant in Japanese manga.

Therefore, my dear daughter decided to surprise him with this cute little ninja warrior craft. She calls it Papa's Ninja :)

Cardboard Tube Elephant Craft

My daughter's "new favorite" friend is her elephant (stuffed toy) and she calls him Dumbo. Her crafting skills are always at work these days. She decorates the elephant with stickers and also makes a ponytail just like mamma does for her. Funnily, she does it by tying the two big ears with a hair tie or by simply putting a hair tie on the head!

Her love for elephant gave us an idea to create this cute little buddy. This is an easy project to upcycle used paper roll tube and also teaches kids the importance of three R's "reduce, reuse, and recycle".
